Thimphu District is home to the Thimphu City, the Capital city of Bhutana and is divided into Thromde (Municipal), Dungkhags (Sub Districts) and Gewogs (Blocks) as follows:

  • Thimphu Thromde
  • Lingzhi Dungkhag
  • Chang Gewog
  • Dagala Gewog
  • Genekha Gewog
  • Kawang Gewog
  • Mewang Gewog

Lingzhi Dungkhag is further divided into Lingzhi Gewog, Naro Gewog and Soe Gewog. 

The Thimphu City (Thimphu Thromde) falls within the areas of Chang Gewog and is the most developed in the whole of Bhutan.

With a total area of 1,748.590 square kilometers, Thimphu is the capital city of Bhutan. The city lies in the western part of the country. It is located at an altitude of 2,330 meters above the sea level. The Dzongkhag has 42.9% of its area under forest cover. The Dzongkhag office is located at Canglimithang.

Almost all of the Lingzhi Dungkhag with its 3 gewogs of Lingzhi, Naro and Soe falls under Jigme Dorji Wangchuk National Park most of it still does not have road connectivity. 

The popular treks such as Jumolhari Trek, Snowman Trek, Laya Gasa Trek, Soe Yaksha Trek Passes through these areas.
